Our Transformation
The Bevis Marks Synagogue Project
In 2015, we began an ambitious journey to transform Britain’s oldest synagogue into a major London cultural, learning, and visitor destination.
Through sensitive restoration and development, we have opened up the Synagogue and its extraordinary collections to visitors from all walks of life –Â to discover the treasures, customs, and living faith of the S&P Sephardi Community.
Our Supporters
This vision has been made possible through the generous support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. In addition we have received very generous gifts from a wide range of donors including The Weisz Foundation, The Exilarch’s Foundation, the Wolfson Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, many other individuals and organisations and the S&P (Spanish and Portuguese) Sephardi Community.
The Dangoor Heritage Centre
Our annexe has been redesigned and refurbished to become The Dangoor Heritage Centre. This is a bright and welcoming space housing our cultural, learning and visitor centre. It includes stunning exhibition displays in the George Weisz Treasury, a visitor café and shop. These superb new facilities can be used for celebrations, meetings, lectures and workshops, as well as musical and artistic activities.

Step into another world and discover treasures, stories and community
Today, for the very first time, the Bevis Marks Synagogue Heritage Foundation has a dedicated space displaying treasures of our collection with fascinating stories to tell. The Community’s ritual silver, vestments and scrolls, handed down through generations, now have pride of place in the atmospheric undercroft.
The Dangoor Education Centre tells the stories behind Bevis Marks Synagogue. Visitors will understand the struggle for tolerance and acceptance that the community has undergone and how Bevis Marks became the centre of a thriving neighbourhood with a school, orphanage, shops and meeting rooms.

A Legacy to be Shared for Centuries to Come
The Bevis Marks Synagogue Project ensures this very special London Synagogue prospers far into the future, telling our stories and sharing our heritage and legacy, to enrich the lives of visitors for centuries to come.
Following our remarkable refurbishment project, the work of our Foundation will continue. The generosity of our contributing donors will sustain the maintenance and preservation of the Synagogue as an active place of worship, as well as supporting cultural and educational activities.
