Many of the items you will see here have been in store for generations. The Dangoor Heritage Centre is the first time they have ever been brought together in one place.

The Bevis Marks Synagogue collection holds around a thousand works of art and craftsmanship — Torah scrolls, ritual silverware, vestments, books, archives and furniture. It is the oldest and most complete collection of any Jewish institution in the UK, and one of the most complete in the world.

What’s on display

The George Weisz Treasury, located in the atmospheric undercroft of the synagogue, displays the community’s ritual silver and vestments in a stunning new display.

Across the rest of The Dangoor Heritage Centre, displays tell the stories behind Bevis Marks: how it was built, the history of the original Spanish and Portuguese community, their place in the City of London, and the cultural customs and traditions unique to this community.

We are also planning a programme of contemporary art, starting with our first Artist in Residence, Tilla Crowne. Tilla’s work Vindiciae Judaeorum explores the readmission of the Jews in the 17th century and will be on display in The Brandon Endowment Gallery, accompanied by a programme of special activities for all ages.

Research and archive access

Items not on display can be viewed on request for research purposes. Our archive collection is held by the London Archives and can be accessed there — please contact the Bevis Marks Synagogue Heritage Foundation to arrange a visit.
